Visionary Artist Collaborates on Public Art Project

footprint1992 -  Houston, Texas -  What began as a community revitalization project with an artistic focus has grown into a smorgasbord of art and social services considered by many to be one of the most visionary public art projects in the country.  Project Row Houses, founded by a group of high school students who collaborated with local Houston artist, Rick Lowe includes visiting artists, after school programs, urban garden installations and housing for women in transition.  Project Row Houses has become a model for public art projects combined with urban revitalization.  It has been duplicated in L.A. and a similar project is slated for South Korea.

With Richard’s input Project Row House has become a venue which incorporates art into everyday life;  art becomes a tool for social and personal change.  “You begin to see that art is not this static thing that sits on a wall but something that has relevance,” says Richards.
